A Lovely Year of Finishes - February Finish

I am so pleased to say that I finished my February goal for ALYoF! My first finish was a pillow cover that started out as my block from the January HMQG meeting. It was my first attempt at improv piecing, and I have come to realized that it is not my cup of tea.

I am a planner.... Everything always has to have a plan, a clear route, and a purpose. You can ask Jeff how stressful it is planning a vacation with me :) Improv piecing drove me insane because I felt like I didn't have a purpose and in the end I hated the block I made. But I knew my sister would love it (it's her favorite colors) so like they say "one person's trash, is another person's treasure".

The pillow cover ended up being 23"x23" and I quilted it in an all over loopy design with purple thread.

I put in a hidden zipper for the closure because I always have issues with envelope backed pillows. This way I know it wont pop open and not look cute.

The finish that I am really excited about is my Lucky Stars QAL quilt! I started this baby last summer, and I finally finished quilting it last week!
It sat around as a finished top for a few weeks because I couldn't figure out how I wanted to quilt it. Then I finally decided to do straight line quilting and I am so glad I did!

I just love the texture it created, even though to took FOR-EV-ER to quilt!

I'm not going to say too much about this quilt here because I am writing a seperate post just for it with all the juicy details about the pattern, fabrics, etc!

I am so stoked that so far during ALYoF, I have met every goal I have set for myself! 2 months down, 10 to go! Plus I am starting to make a dent in my hefty WIP list.

Now I need to decided what I want to do for my March goal :)

  1. Awesome finishes! I'm with you on improve piecing... I enjoy the look of it, but the process is not my favorite.

  2. Really beautiful! Great finiishes!

  3. Really beautiful finishes, congrats !

  4. absolutely gorgeous quilt. I love the background colour and how the greens and purples shine through.

  5. I've never tried improv piecing but that pillow is beautiful!! I love the fabric choices and especially the loopy free motion quilting. Definitely another persons treasure - it even looks great with the quilt! I can imagine that the texture of that quilt is amazing, I have to always remind myself that it is worth the effort to do something like that because the finished result. Great work!

  6. The process of improv piecing may not be your cup of tea but it sure turned out cute!! Your Lucky Stars quilt is beautiful and the quilting is perfect! Congrats on getting so much finished.

  7. Love your quilt finish! The colors look cool and calming!

  8. Um, your Lucky Stars is AMAZING! I love the colors you picked. It looks so different from the others I saw. I saw it a lot in Happy Go Lucky, this is my favorite by a landslide:) You know, I have yet to try improv piecing myself! I bought a book on it recently, so I am going to give it a try. Yours looks great, love the patchwork look to it.

  9. Love how your pillow turned out!! I'm about to give improve piecing a go myself :) Your quilt is gorgeous!!! Jaw dropping even!! The colors, the quilting - perfect!! Congrats on the wonderful finishes!
