WIP Wednesday

I haven't done a WIP Wednesday post in a very long time! This week I am super excited about what I am working on. If you follow me on Instagram you have seen that I am making goodies for my soon to be born niece. I'm making her a quilt, and crib sheets, and a bed skirt for her crib. I love playing with all these girly colors.

I am working with Amy Butler's Bright Heart Fabric. I picked up FQ bundles and yardage from one of my favorite online shops, Hawthorne Threads. They still have quite a bit in stock and shipping was super fast!
The pattern I am using for the quilt is an adaptation of a pattern from Elizabeth Dackson's book, Becoming a Confident Quilter. I simply didn't add the strips of sashing between the patchwork. I love the look of this, it reminds me of my Texas QAL quilt top.
Today I made the label that I am going to applique on the back, and I am so glad I was paying attention because my first version had a typo! My niece is being born in March of 2016 not 2015! This is my first time printing on fabric, so hopefully it lasts like I have read. I might test wash the mistake one to see if the ink runs.
Well that is what I am working on this week. What are you working on?

Quilted Advent Calendar Finish

For my first finish of 2016, I decided to get a head start on Christmas this year by finishing a UFO (unfinished object) that I have had laying around since 2013 ;) I started working on this advent calendar as a part of the Countdown to Christmas Quilt-Along over at Better Off Thread. Well one thing let to another, and then this sucker ended up in a tote in the closet.
I made it using a Charm pack of Kate Spain's In From the Cold line for Moda, and then pair that with coordinating solids in gray, red, green, and aqua. I posted most of my progress on Instagram, I think in total it probably took me a week to get this thing done. Stitching the appliqued numbers down took the longest, followed closely by the quilting.
With this quilt I wanted to try something different with my quilting. I normally will go with straight lines or an easy all over stipple, but with this I decided to go for pebbles. At first my pebbles looked more like jagged rocks, but once I got the hang of it things went much more smoothly. I love how the overall look is reminiscent of snowballs... or I guess what I think snowballs look like. Living in south Texas = no winter!
This is my first mini that I have added pockets to hang with a dowel rod. I normally just use push pins, but this sucker is heavy to begin with and I know once the pockets are filled with candy it will be even heavier. My backing is a pale green Cotton Couture solid I had in my stash, and my binding is from Kate Spain's newest Christmas line Jingle.
William is so excited about being able to use this to count down the days till Christmas. He has already started asking me how long until it's Christmas again LOL!

2016 Finish Along - Q1

Like I mentioned in my Word of the Year... post my goal for 2016 is to Focus. For too long I've fallen victim to "oh shiny" syndrome, and I haven't dedicated my time to working on things already in progress. This year is (let's be honest) 90% about finishing UFOs, with a little wiggle room for new projects. So with that I give you my goals for the first quarter of the 2016 Finish Along.

First is to start and finish several nursery items I am making for my brother and sister-in-law. They're expecting their second child at the beginning of March, and I am so happy it's a girl so I can make overly girly things! RUFFLES! I am using Bright Heart by Amy Butler, and the colors are simply divine!

My next several goals are to finish the various quilt tops that I have laying around waiting to be quilted. Now that I have my Janome 8900, I can bust out the quilting on a twin sized quilt in no time.

The quilts I need to quilt are:

I still have a bunch of other things to work on too, but I wanted to be realistic with what I think I can really get done! Wish me luck :)

Word of the Year....

This year will be my first year of having a Word of the Year, and that word is Focus.

I have read several posts from some of my favorite bloggers and close friends about what they have chosen to be their "Word of the Year". I was inspired to choose a word of the year when reading Crystal's post over at Raspberry Spool. It really hit home with me when she said,
"I need to run my own race and stop worrying what other people are doing and worry about what works for me."
This is me in a nutshell.... I have always been the type to compare what I do to what others are doing (just ask my mom about my pre-teen years). There are so many VERY talented people in the Quilting community and, for me at least, it's hard to not start to compare my work with others.

I end up not accomplishing much of anything because I am busy worrying if it will be cool enough, or if it will get enough Instagram likes, or if it will be loved by others. When in reality I need to focus on how what I do makes me feel.
I need this to hang in my studio.

So this year I am going to Focus. I'm going to focus on accepting that I am enough, focus on doing what makes me happy rather than following trends that I don't love. Focus on finishing projects that have been put away for too long.

And most of all, focus on myself. There were several events during the last few months of 2015 that were very difficult for me, and I came out of it unhealthy & severely stressed. Thankfully things have been looking up recently, but I still have a ways to go before being back to normal. And you know what, that's ok. I'm not overly religious by any means, but I do feel that things happen for a reason and I am excited about the path that I am on.

So how about you... Do you have a word of the year, or specific goals you want to achieve for 2016?
