Bed-Frame Overhaul: The Finale!

It's here finally! I have finished the overhaul of our bed-frame! This was the first piece of furniture I have ever attempted to revamp, so as you already know it took several weeks and lots of patience. But in the end it has been completely worth it!

Here is a  reminder of the before (after I had already stripped all the nastiness off):

Ladies and possibly some Gentlemen, may I present to you my good as new Minty Fresh bed-frame!
When I first bought the color I was super excited, then I got home and I immediately second guessed my decision. But since you can't return paint I decided to just go with my original instinct, and I am so glad that I did. I absolutely LOVE how this turned out! I used Behr Premium Plus in satin enamel and the color is Mint Frappe.

After I painted the whole thing I had toyed with the idea of distressing it, so once again I consulted Pinterest. I found several awesome tutorials for distressing painted furniture. In the end I decided that I like the crispness of the minty color and I will let time do the distressing for me :)

Eventually I want to get all white linens for our bed, but for now I've got to settle for what we've got (brown sheets and a lime green duvet). <-- Sounds pretty ugly huh. Luckily our bed-frame is a breath of fresh air :)

My sister-in-law came over today and she thought that I had bought a brand new bed-frame! I would say that is a job well done :)

If you missed the first two parts of this series, you can find them right here: Part 1, Part 2

p.s. just ignore that the bed isn't made :) I decided to take pictures while doing laundry.

Sorry I've Been Missing in Action

Hey everyone! Sorry I have been missing in action the past few days :( Jeff and I are getting ready to go on our first vacation since the baby was born and I have been running around like a chicken with its head cut off. We're heading to Colorado for our friend's wedding, and the baby is going to be staying with Jeff's parents while we are gone. We're going to be gone a total of 5 nights. This is the first time that I'm not going to be with the baby for an extended period of time, and it is eating me up inside.

The thought of being in a completely different state than William makes me very anxious. I know he is going to be well taken care of with Jeff's parents, but I can't help to be nervous. I think the fact that I stay home with him makes it even worse because I am so used to seeing him all the time. Not seeing his little face in the morning is going to be a bummer :( But Jeff's parents don't get much time with the baby, so it will be nice for them to have this bonding time with him.

My biggest worry is how William is going to react to me not being there with him. I have already started to notice that he is becoming much clingier as he is getting bigger, and I have a feeling it is because he doesn't go to daycare. Hopefully he has a great time with his Gran and Grandad this weekend.

Despite how much I am going to miss my little man, I am very much looking forward to a romantic weekend with Jeffrey :) We have not had a weekend for the two of us in a very very very long time. I know we are both looking forward to this time to reconnect, especially since he has been gone most of the summer working in Houston.

I was planning on posting the finale to my bed-frame overhaul but like I said, things have been so crazy. I will post as soon as I go and pick up William from my in-laws and bring him home next Tuesday.

We're heading to Mary's Lake Lodge in Estes Park, CO. Hopefully the beauty of this place will distract me from missing the baby.

Bloggy Olympics Event #1: Decorating!

I am super excited about this first event in the Bloggy Olympics! I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do, but a few minutes hours on Pinterest later and I had an idea. I'm sure most of you by now have seen these adorable flower balls on Pinterest. I think they are super cute for weddings or little girls birthday parties, but I wanted to do something for the Fourth of July.

So I came up with the idea to do the same thing but with a wreath and stars instead of flowers and a ball! This was probably one of the easiest projects I have done in a while, except for the fact that my index finger is killing me from all the times I stabbed myself with the pins.

The materials are really simple: foam wreath, scrapbook paper, star hole punch, straight pins, and ribbon. Start punching away and then start pinning away!

Here's my wreath with just a few stars on it, before my fingers started to hate me.

Almost done!

Ready for a close-up! Look at all those amazing stars!

Tada! I love how it turned out! Part of me feels like it needs something in the middle, but I'm not exactly sure what. I hope you like my 4th of July decorating project :) I think I should head to Hobby Lobby and hit up their sale section for some lights to go around the door.

You can check out my link to this project on Delicate Construction and Hating Martha. Hooray for event 1 of the Bloggy Olympics! I can't wait for event 2!

Bed-Frame Overhaul: Part 2

Well I have been working on this thing for a couple weeks now and I am finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I originally was going to strip, sand and stain the frame but upon further examination I discovered that the water damage seeped its way really deep into the wood. Even after sanding with my nifty electric sander, there was still damage.

Here you can see some of the damage in the wood. This picture was taken after using the chemical stripping agent 3 times, and sanding with an electric sander. My cousins really did a number on this poor bed.

I love the functionality of this bed and that was the main reason I wanted to fix it up so it can last another 50 years in my family. So it was onto plan B, paint.

I cleaned up the frame really well, making sure to get all dust and residual stripping material off of it, and then I gave it about a coat and a half of primer. I am really liking how it is turning out so far and I cannot wait until it is finished and back in the house.

At first my mom had a slight panic attack when I told her I was going to paint the bed (she's not a fan of painted furniture at all) but she seems to be warming up to the idea. I hope she likes it because there's no going back now!

The Bloggy Olympics

I am super excited to announce that I am going to be participating in the Bloggy Olympics 2012! Each week there is going to be a new event, and the hosts will post tutorials on their blogs that coincide with the theme. Then at the end of the week, there will be a link party for everyone participating to post a link to their project!

I am really excited about this because it will be great motivation for me to get a bunch of my to-do list projects done, and it will be great exposure for Young Texan Mama.

Here is the schedule and info for anyone who wants to join in the excitement. You can head on over to Hating Martha and check out her awesome DIY area rug tutorial, and then swing by Delicate Construction and see her reversible mantle decor tutorial.

Check back soon to see all the awesome projects that I'll be posting in the very near future :)

10 Months Old

Today my little man turned 10 months old! If you would have told me a year and a half ago that this is where I would be today, I would have called you crazy. But now that I'm here, I wouldn't change a single thing about my life. I cannot even put into words the joy William has brought into my life. Jeff and I are so fortunate to have such a healthy and vibrant son.

Being a mom is no easy task; it has been and will always be my greatest challenge in life.

I love this picture of us :)

Bed-Frame Overhaul

Like I mentioned in my last post, I am in the process of refinishing our bed-frame, and holy cow it is way harder than I thought it would be. This bed-frame has been in my family for YEARS; seriously it is probably older than both of my parents. It was my Mom's bed when she was young, and since then it has traveled to different family members. I acquired it shortly after my uncle moved to Austin from Brownsville, and it was in terrible shape.

My step-cousins almost ruined it; they left drinks on the headboard which left zillions of rings, they carved their names into it, and they even stuck gum all over the back of it. As you can imagine, I definitely have a ton of work ahead of me.

I'll post more when I find my camera in the mountain of boxes. I definitely regret packing it :(

Not Quite Home Sweet Home.... yet

So we just got moved into our new place and tonight is our first night here. We don't even have cable and internet set up yet, so I'm writing this on my phone. Jeff is back in Houston for work so I am going to tackle unpacking all our boxes in the coming week and hopefully get it done very soon.

Our poor dining room is full of boxes, but luckily most of the furniture is where it is going to stay. I have our bed taken apart and in the backyard because I am refinishing it (look for a post soon). I am really looking forward to getting things unpacked completely and turning this house into our home :)
